Assistive Devices Program (ADP)
Under Ontario’s Assistive Devices Program, orthotics are custom-made or prefabricated external devices designed to support, align, correct, or improve the function of the feet, legs, spine, upper limbs, and other body areas.
These devices are prescribed by qualified healthcare professionals to help manage conditions affecting movement, stability, pain, posture, mobility, and independence.

Ontario ADP Funding Framework
- Orthotics must be medically necessary and prescribed by an authorized healthcare professional.
- Devices must be provided by an ADP-registered authorizer and vendor.
- ADP funding may cover 75% of the approved device cost.
- The remaining 25% may be paid by private insurance, the patient, or social assistance programs.
- Approval is based on established clinical criteria and functional need.
Role of Orthotics in Care
Orthotics are often part of a broader care plan that may include physiotherapy, rehabilitation, medication, surgery, or other medical treatment. The goal is to improve function, independence, comfort, and quality of life.
